Hormone Replacement Therapy

Has your endocrine function been tested as part of you pain management evaluation? Primary hormone problems can be a cause of chronic pain. This clearly occurs in certain thyroid disorders and vitamin D deficiency (yes, vitamin D does have hormonal functions). The treatment of chronic pain can also cause secondary hormone abnormalities as well. It is now well established that narcotic medications (especially at high doses) can cause hypothalamic and pituitary suppression of gonadal hormones, especially in men. This can result in low testosterone, often making pain problems worse. Common symptoms of low testosterone include lower pain tolerance, diminished energy, anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, decreased cognitive function, diminished muscle mass and strength, and obesity. When indicated, our practice checks for these abnormalities with proper blood testing. Hormone replacement will be offered if indicated.
